PG-13 Rated Movies

PGA PG-13 rating is where the MPAA system perhaps starts to become most helpful to parents deciding on whether to let their kids see a movie. In short, PG-13 means “parents strongly cautioned.”

Practically speaking, the popular rating can be interpreted many ways: Definitely not for little kids; possibly too mature for your middle-schooler; maybe too crass for Grandma; likely OK for a high school field trip. But, as with PG movies, there’s a lot of subjectivity at play, and pretty much all categories of mature content—violence, strong language, sexual situations, terror, et al—could be present, even if only briefly. So think of it this way: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) is a very different PG-13 than Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999). Or this way: The King’s Speech (2010) is a very different PG-13 than Insidious (2010). Parents, do what feels right.
