Just in time for the holidays, Walt Disney Animation is set to unveil a new animated treat to audiences young and old. STRANGE WORLD is an original action-adventure movie that opens in theatres Thanksgiving week.

The newest film from the studio’s animation arm follows the Clade family. The elder Clade was a legendary explorer who disappeared years ago; now his son and his family must journey through uncharted and treacherous territory full of fantastical creatures. Check out the latest STRANGE WORLD trailer below and learn a few more things about Disney's latest animated movie.

Where Can You See Strange World?

STRANGE WORLD will be seen exclusively in movie theatres beginning on November 23.

This new trailer for STRANGE WORLD does a lot more to set up the story than anything else we've seen so far.

Searcher Clade — a farmer who exists under the shadow of his missing father, a famed explorer who disappeared decades ago — is called into action on a mission of extreme urgency. But this mission does not take place on their home world. Whisked to a far-away planet, Searcher and his family encounter a wide array of surprising plants and creatures. They also find none other than Jaeger Clade, Searcher's long-lost father.

The Strange World Cast

Leading the cast of STRANGE WORLD as Searcher Clade is Jake Gyllenhall. He is joined by Dennis Quaid as Jaeger Clade, Searcher’s larger-than-life explorer father. Jaboukie Young-White voices Ethan Clade, Searcher’s 16-year-old son who longs for adventure beyond his father’s farm. Gabrielle Union plays Meridian Clade, a pilot and natural leader, mom to Ethan, and wife of Searcher, and Lucy Liu is Callisto Mal, the head of the land of Avalonia and the leader of the exploration into the strange world.

Word is that Alan Tudyk also voices a character. More members of the voice cast may still be announced as the release of STRANGE WORLD grows near.

The Writer and Director of Strange World

Both the writer and director of STRANGE WORLD have established careers with Disney. Director Don Hall and screenwriter and co-director Qui Nguyen previously collaborated on RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON, released just this past year.

Hall, in particular, has quite the repertoire with Disney: he directed BIG HERO 6, wrote MEET THE ROBINSONS, and has credits on MOANA, RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET, THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG, and THE EMPEROR’S NEW GROOVE. He also created the BIG HERO 6 spinoff series "Baymax"!

The Pulpy Origins of Strange World

Don Hall has stated that part of his inspiration for STRANGE WORLD was derived from the pulp magazines he read as a kid. Hall said: “I loved reading the old issues of pulps growing up. They were big adventures in which a group of explorers might discover a hidden world or ancient creatures. They’ve been a huge inspiration for STRANGE WORLD."

For context: during the first half of the 20th century, popular fiction stories were printed on cheap, wood pulp paper, thus leading to the term “pulp magazine.” It will certainly be interesting to see exactly how Hall’s inspiration from pulp magazines will translate into STRANGE WORLD.

STRANGE WORLD opens on November 23.
