Marvel plans to conclude its current massive "Multiverse Cycle" storyline with a pair of Avengers movies — in much the same way that INFINITY WAR and ENDGAME capped off the studio's first massive cycle.
AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY is the first of the two, with a May 2026 release date and the eye-opening return of actor Robert Downey, Jr. to the MCU. But he's not back to play Iron Man — he's playing a different armored Marvel character, Doctor Doom. You can read more about AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY here.
A year later, AVENGERS: SECRET WARS, will be released. Most of the details around DOOMSDAY are closely-guarded secrets at this point, and we know even less about SECRET WARS. We’ve got a title and a logo and little else… but we do know that the Russo Brothers are also returning to Marvel to direct both of these new Avengers movies. When Can We See a Trailer for Avengers: Secret Wars?
We probably won't see a trailer for AVENGERS: SECRET WARS for a long time! While Marvel may choose to film some elements of SECRET WARS at the same time as DOOMSDAY, any filming for the new Avengers movies won't begin until spring or summer of 2025.
Who Will Direct Avengers: Secret Wars?
Anthony and Joe Russo are directing both DOOMSDAY and SECRET WARS. We already knew the two movies would be a connected pair of stories in the same way that INFINITY WAR and ENDGAME were, but having the Russos on board makes Marvel's intentions even more clear.
Speculation about the Russos retuning has run rampant for a long time, especially since the brothers have, in the past, been very open about their interest in making a SECRET WARS movie.
Which Heroes Will Be in Avengers: Secret Wars?
This is another question for which we do not have a clear answer. We do know some of the characters who will be on hand, however. The Fantastic Four, which make their MCU debut in July 2025, are an important part of both DOOMSDAY and SECRET WARS. Likewise, Doctor Doom will be in both of the Avengers films.
It's reasonable to expect that many other of the current major Marvel characters will turn up as well. But we don't know if someone like Spider-Man will once again be part of the story cycle. We also have to see what happens to some of the characters in the movies arriving before DOOMSDAY — there are at least three, and potentially more.
The bigger question is likely to be which characters will not survive this conflict, and which aspects of the multiverse will be gone at the end.
